Controversial Residents Parking Changes Agreed by Council

The controversial changes proposed to residents parking brought a record amount of objections. A special residents parking edition of the Lib Dem Focus leaflet in the town centre had over 80 people return the attached objection form to the Council.

The proposals include a more than doubling of the permit cost to £25 a year, a £50 cost to a second permit and a £100 cost to a third one, newcomers to be limited to only one permit and a phasing out of the second and third permit over three years to existing holders, a reduction of visitor permits to per household not as now per person and the creation of special operational permits for occupation or service users at £1.10 for one hour.

The obvious worry is for residents with more than one car - often by necessity rather than desire. The believed benefit of the proposals will be the generation of more spaces to park but the ultimate question is do the dis-benefits outweigh the hoped for gain in parking.

Residents parking sole role is to help residents not make their life's more difficult - it is this principal that appears to have been forgotten as the council agreed the changes.

The new scheme is scheduled to start in February or March.
